When I was writing my previous post, I thought I would make only one New Year’s resolution. But as I reflected more on the idea of practice — of introducing new behaviours into everyday life — the question of perseverance naturally appeared. Because without perseverance, no practice can truly last.

A friend of mine decided several times that she would not drink alcohol for an entire year. And each time, she kept that resolution without breaking it. I, on the other hand, usually don’t make New Year’s resolutions. But after some deeper reflection, I realised that the New Year is just as good a moment to start or end something as any other time. So why not begin now?

So I decided that this year I will practise gratitude — and perseverance.

Perseverance is a quality that helps us reach our goals. For me, it hasn’t always come easily. A good example is starting this blog. At the beginning, I had big plans: one post per week, a head full of ideas. Then came the technical side — preparing the website turned out to be more challenging than I expected, and I had to ask my partner for help.

When the website was finally ready, something unexpected happened. I suddenly didn’t know what to write about. All the topics that had been swirling in my head simply disappeared. I realised then that I should write ideas down to avoid this in the future.

But that wasn’t the main issue. The real challenge for me is that I’m not always persistent in carrying through my intentions. Sometimes even small difficulties become barriers that are hard for me to cross. And then I stop.

I wonder whether this is only my problem.
Or maybe you feel the same?

That’s why my second New Year’s resolution is to practise perseverance. How often new posts appear here will be, for me, a small indicator of how I’m doing with this practice.

I don’t know if that’s too much pressure.
But we’ll see. 🙂
